Pergolas as features, or functional structures for shade screening are a popular way of finishing a house & give it a “face”. African Hardwood, as shown in the gallery, has installed numerous pergolas.

Again, extensive knowledge of the timber & how to work with timber is the main “black box” ingredient. As with decking, stainless steel or galvanised fittings are important. It’s also important to use chemical anchors between steel & concrete and screw timber from the top, as this will give moisture a point of entry. Popular timbers in this case are Meranti, Balau, Keruing, African Mahogany & laminated.
