Pergolas as features or pergolas as functional structures for shade screening is a poplar way of finishing a house & give it a “face”. Wood 4 Africa, as shown in the gallery, has installed numerous pergolas. 

Again, knowledge of the timber & how to work with timber is the main “black box” ingredient. Like with deck, stainless steel or galvanised fittings are important. It’s also important to use chemical anchors between steel & concrete and screw timber from the top, as this will give moisture a point of entry. Popular timbers in this case is Meranti, Balau, Keruing, African Mahogany & laminated.
